PLENARY 1: Environment, climate and water: main achievements and way forward

The EU and Governments of Central Asian countries are advancing policy dialogue on environmental sustainability and water management, education and rule of law in order to develop a number of policy initiatives to allocate significant resources to the water management sector, afforestation, biodiversity and environmental raising awareness actions and environment sector in Central Asia.

The panel will present the potential for sustainable environment and water cooperation in the region, the main clean technology focuses, the current and future policy developments as well as the main national projects in areas related to water, the environment and climate change including Regional Environment Program for Central Asia (EURECA), Water and Environment Cooperation Platform (WECOOP), the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea, the Inter-State Commission for Sustainable Development and the Inter-State Commission for Water Coordination.

PLENARY 2: Enabling Environment Investment Projects

Numerous financing institutions are active in Central Asia and support the development of environment, water, renewable energy and energy efficiency. These institutions possess strong technical and financial expertise in sustainable project development and are hence key potential partners for the preparation of major projects. (e.g. Sustainable Energy Programme for Central Asia” (CASEP) and the “Covenant of Mayors-East” initiative). This session will present their regional sustainable environment and energy policies and the potential for future partnerships. Panellists will discuss the concrete links between investments and the required favourable business environment, in which such investments can thrive. The discussion will focus on the different perspectives stakeholders have, comparing project developers requiring attractive conditions on the one hand with policymakers expecting viable projects on the other.

PLENARY 3: Expanding Innovative and Sustainable Clean Technology Projects

This session will provide the audience with significant insights for assessing the opportunity of doing business, research and technology development in Central Asia. It will present the investment climate in the region, relevant technology solutions for water resource management, water treatment and sanitation, waste management, energy efficiency, technologies in rural areas, and the experience of major European business and technology development players in the exploration of the region as well as in the preparation and execution of clean technology projects. Central Asia countries are more and more, as Europe does, focusing on innovation as a means to sustainable economic and social development, therefore panellists discuss opportunities for collaborative research and innovation projects funded through the new European research and innovation programme ‘HORIZON 2020′ (2014-2020), which is ‘open to the world’.
