During the conference Green Bridge Forum 2013 following themes were discussed:
1. The opportunities of cooperation between Latvia and Kazakhstan in order to green growth
Representatives of the government, local authorities, business and academia discussed the cooperation mechanisms that facilitate the transition to a “green economy” and a new long-term solutions in the creation and implementation of new technologies. How to create and improve the business, educational and scientific conditions, infrastructure and access to environmentally sound technologies and investments. Experts shared their experiences of the best practices in both countries: Kazakhstan and Latvia.
2. Water treatment and water management
Creation and use of new solutions in the field of water management, processing, purification, filtration and storage of drinking water and wastewater. Experience of Latvia and Kazakhstan in implementing new technologies and methods and their adaptation to the local market.
There is a need to strengthen dialogue and cooperation on solving the key issues: water quality, the use and protection of waters, determining the sustainability of life and future developments of regions. It is important to identify best practices for water savings, improving irrigation performance, reversing trends in land degradation and salinity, and contributing to the development of effective water resource institutions.
3. Latvia’s experience in the implementation of energy-efficient solutions
The main task of the industry – to reduce the consumption of energy and resources, using technologies that allow you to do work (e.g. to produce) faster, cheaper and more efficient, in general, spending fewer resources. There are many motivations to improve energy efficiency. Reducing energy use reduces energy costs and may result in a financial cost saving to consumers if the energy savings offset any additional costs of implementing an energy efficient technology. Reducing energy use is also seen as a solution to the problem of reducing carbon dioxide emissions. Energy efficiency and renewable energy are said to be the twin pillars of sustainable energy policy and are high priorities in the sustainable energy hierarchy. Both strategies must be developed concurrently in order to stabilize and reduce carbon dioxide emissions. Efficient energy use is essential to slowing the energy demand growth so that rising clean energy supplies can make deep cuts in fossil fuel use.
3. Reconstruction of infrastructure: environment friendly solutions
How to create a sustainable urban systems with the use of green building processes, the creation of infrastructure and make effective use of the planning environment, including built-in smart city, production and service technologies, waste management, renewable energy and environmental design.
On second and thrid day of the event participants of Green Bridge Forum 2013 had opprtunity to visit some cleantech sites in Latvia, such as:
• UPB – Liepaja Bio-kogeneration Station
• Vega 1 Waste water treatment facility – Jelgava
• Karme Filtrsr – drinking – water for cleaning and a mobile station in Jurmala treatment plant (container) in Riga
• Citrus Solutions – Lattelecom data center – as an energy-efficient data processing solutions
• Industrial Energy Efficiency Cluster and Menerga – RTU student dormotry Kipsala (low energy consumption, reconstruction of innovative technologies – heat recovery from ventilation and sewage system)
